If you want your entertainment experience to be complete, then pay just as much attention to speaker systems as you do to the television, DVD and CD players, and so on. Even the highest quality television doesn't come with adequate speakers, so you have to buy speakers good enough to match the excellent picture quality. And you need to decide if you'll buy a home audio system that is pre-packaged, or whether you'll buy the speakers as separate components.
Choosing between a pre-packed home audio system and the option of buying separate speaker components may not be difficult. The packaged system tends to be less expensive, and the components are all the same brand and are designed to work together. It would be harder to integrate more varied components with your home receiver, and separate components would probably cost more. Yet that option is more desirable if you know how to do the wiring, because the quality tends to be slightly better.
The size of your room might also come into play, especially if you're going with separate, audio system components. Many experts believe you need at least five different speakers in a room in order to get good sound, especially if you're going for home theater surround sound. But even better than that, others say, is to get a total of eight speakers. One of these will be what is known as a subwoofer. This kind of speaker handles the low frequencies, and enriches the sound to the point where you might almost feel as though you're in a real theater.
No matter how good some home theater systems bargains appear to be, before you buy you should insist on having the chance to hear them in action. This doesn't mean a big box store, with all its echoes and competing noise; you need a room where you can close the door, and which approximates a home audio setup similar to your own domestic theater. This is an investment and not a trifling matter, so take it very seriously.
