Cars the movie was a fun and frolicking children's movie that seemed like a sure bet to inspire video games of the same premise. The Cars game for the Nintendo Wii console has a few rough edges, but overall, it's a challenging game for the audience it was designed for; the younger gaming crowd. The game is set in the dusty town of Radiator Springs and features courses in the desert as well as cities and mountains. Developers designed the core of the game to appeal to the youngest video game enthusiast, so hard core racing game fans won't see much good here.

The tractor-tipping mini-game in the Cars game is a bit annoying. Instead of the typical Wii controller used in other races, you treat Mater the tow truck like a marble on a plate; swirling the controller to move him in the direction you desire. Because this is a stealth mini-game, the ability to stop on a dime is important. The controller lacks this ability and so it is almost impossible to perform this correctly. With no camera control, you never know where the policeman Frank is patrolling. The hard part is trying to maneuver this mini-game and then go back to controlling Lightning on other courses; it's difficult to adjust.

Multiplayer mode has only decent game play; it's pretty average among racing games. It's true that without a story tying the concepts together and an open world to blow the doors off, race courses just start to blend together over time. A few more creative matches that take advantage of the bigger worlds would have been nice for the Wii format.

Though it's a tad bit more tricky to steer and control the action with the Wii remote, the Wii Cars game is still a fun little racing game for those it is marketed towards; younger gamers. The graphics are really wonderful and there are more than a few laughs to be had at the funny one-liners and silly jokes sprinkled throughout the game.
